What sort of things do you do on the farm?

We are a fully functioning farm with a variety of animals and activities, and we’re passionate about sharing our farm life with visitors. Our program is designed to encourage participants to engage with the environment and each other, and to promote physical activity and skill development through interacting with the farm animals and assisting with farm jobs. We strive to create a safe and accessible environment where participants can achieve their goals.

Horsemanship - Horse riding, groundwork, grooming, understanding horse communication, equipment, training and care. Participants will have the opportunity to assist in catching, grooming and saddling their horse, as well as enjoying a trail ride and learning groundwork and riding skills. As clients work through our goal-based skill development program, they may learn more advanced horse riding techniques, including obstacles and working with cattle.

Cowboy skills - Whip cracking, roping and lassoing, obstacles, working with cattle, rodeos, cowboy racing events.

Cowboy school - Aimed at expanding participants’ knowledge about horses, through short interactive lessons. Topics covered include horse breeds and colours, anatomy, equipment, feed and wellbeing, costs, sporting activities and more.

Agriculture and regenerative farming - assisting with planting, growing and harvesting vegetables for animal and human use, taking care of the soil, composting, worms and other creatures, alternatives to chemicals, the cycle of growth and composting and how the seasons and weather impact the farm.

Baking and cooking for the animals - making animal treats and other goumet meals for the pet bakery, learning about nutrition, animal feeding, packaging foods and handling equipment.

Animal handling and interaction - horses, dogs, cats, chickens, sheep, cows, hatching chickens, rescue kittens and many more.

Forgotten trades - woodwork, lead lighting, leatherwork, weaving and braiding, pyro art, line dancing.

What should I wear/bring to visit the farm?

As we are a farm with real animals and outdoor conditions, it’s important to wear the right clothes to ensure your comfort and safety. Prepare to get a little dirty and spend time outside.

Sturdy closed-toe footwear is essential. In the warm weather we recommend a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and appropriate clothing. In cold weather we recommend a warm jumper, and in the rain we advise wearing gumboots and a raincoat. We also recommend bringing your own drink bottle, and any allergy / hayfever medications required.

We advise against skirts and dresses while riding horses, as they can make it difficult to sit in the saddle. Expect to see us in comfortable clothes, including jeans and cowboy boots.

Do you accept casual visits?

We do! A booking is still required for casual visits. You can attend for just one visit on a casual basis without committing to ongoing sessions. Casual visits are available for both group bookings and individual participants.

Can I just pop in, or do I need to make a booking?

You must have a booking to visit the farm. We need to know when and where our visitors are on the farm in order to keep everyone safe and ensure they get the most out of each session, as well as ensuring gates and animals are properly interacted with. It is also a requirement for our insurance that all visitors be properly supervised. Please get in contact to make a booking before your visit.

Do you offer 1:1 bookings?

Unfortunately no, we are usually unable to offer one-on-one individual bookings. We believe that social engagement is very important, so participants will be included in activities with a small group of other participants and staff. If participants require 1:1 support to effectively engage, then they will need to provide their own support staff to assist during their session.

How do I make a booking?

You can find our online booking form page linked below. You can also send us an email at roamingranch@gmail.com ,  or download our enrolment form below. Forms can be returned via email. Please make sure all forms are returned to us before your visit.

Do you have toilet facilities?

We sure do. We have multiple composting toilets on site available for use, and taps for hand washing. A composting toilet is an environmentally conscious and healthy way to dispose of waste without plumbing (and is much nicer than a drop toilet). It involves depositing a scoop of sawdust into the toilet after use, instead of flushing. The waste and sawdust is then regularly disposed of. There is no bad smell, no overuse of water or harsh cleaning chemicals, and is an excellent rustic option to suit our farm and needs.

Do you take volunteers? Or work experience?

Our current structure and insurance is not suitable for volunteers on site, so at this time we are not taking volunteers. We have done so in the past and may do so again, so you are still welcome to enquire about volunteer or work experience opportunities if you would like more information.

I'm interested in attending a particular activity, when do you offer it?

Our schedule varies each day based on a number of factors. Please get in contact and let us know what you’re interested in, and we can discuss which days and times would be most suitable.
